Benefits of Polarized Glasses

Did you know the greatest danger from the sun generally occurs during the summer months? This means the upcoming period between June and September poses the biggest challenge when it comes to protecting your eyes.

If you’ve been contemplating new sunglasses, it’s important to understand the benefits of a pair that can also block out harmful UV light and guard against glare.

At Austin Vision Center, your trusted Austin optometrist, we work to educate patients on why they should wear sunglasses when spending time outdoors. Read on to learn more about the benefits of polarized glasses.

What Are Polarized Lenses?

The magnitude of the sun brightness makes most people who aren't wearing sunglasses squint as a means to try and protect their eyes. Imagine how much better you would see outside with a trip to the eye doctor and glasses that offer true UV protection.

Polarized lenses, which have a special chemical applied to them to filter light, are designed to reduce glare and improve your vision in the sun.

How Do Polarized Lenses Work?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, that chemical on your lenses creates a filter to block some sunlight from passing through the polarized lens. Essentially, it allows your eyes to see vertical light while blocking out all horizontal light waves, including those which bounce off smooth surfaces.

As a result, what you'll see through your polarized glasses will look a bit darker than usual. However, objects will generally look crisp and clear.

The National Eye Institute projects the number of people affected by the most common eye diseases will double between 2010 and 2050. That includes vision impairment related to sun exposure.
