Why Are Pediatric Eye Exams Important

Why Are Pediatric Eye Exams So Important?

As a parent, your child is the light of your life and you just want what's best for them. Here at Austin Vision Center in Austin, TX, we know that includes pediatric eye care. Here are three reasons it's important to have regular eye exams for your child.

1. Children Are Still Growing

Just like the rest of their bodies, children's eyes and skulls are still physically growing. This leads to rapid changes in vision capabilities and head sizes. If your child wears glasses, he or she will need to be fitted for new sizes periodically. When they are old enough, we can also explore the option for your child to wear contact lenses.

2. Easier to Detect and Treat Issues

Just as you take your child to their pediatrician for regular check-ups, it's important to visit the pediatric optometrist regularly as well. Regular eye exams can help us set a baseline so we know what's normal for your child's vision. With this knowledge, we can spot abnormalities and vision issues early on and be proactive about treatment before conditions get worse.

3. Teaches Them Good Habits

When eye exams become part of your child's routine, they get used to visiting our office so it's not as scary for them. They'll learn about all the tools we use, and get familiar with the various tests performed during our annual exam process. This also helps them to learn good habits so that they will continue coming to see us as they grow into adulthood.
