Common Issues That Can Be Caught during an Eye Exam

Eye exams are an important part of life for anyone who needs glasses or has eye problems. Most people don’t know that routine eye exams are essential for eye health and that without them, many eye diseases may progress to unmanageable levels before they’re detected. By seeing your Austin, TX, eye doctor every year, you receive certain tests that identify these problems early.

At Austin Vision Center, we encourage our patients to schedule yearly eye exams, especially if your family has a history of vision or eye problems, and for anyone over the age of 50. Eye problems may have few to no symptoms in their early stages, so annual eye exams are the best way to maintain your good eye health.

What Happens During an Exam?

The first thing you will do is meet with our therapeutic optometrists and have a one-on-one consultation. Most people remember the acuity vision test, where you identify the smallest letter you can read on a chart. This helps to identify any problems you are developing with your vision. A tonometry test measures the pressure on the inside of your eye, and checks for extra fluid pressure. If your pressure is off, you may be developing glaucoma.

During the consultation, we will get information about any current medicines you are taking, family history of eye problems, and visual symptoms or headaches which may indicate developing eye problems. Our tests measure everything from eye function to depth perception, to eye muscle performance and peripheral vision. We also make sure your eyes are working well together.
